Child Assessments at WPS

Child psychological assessments help identify the individual's strengths whilst indicating areas where the child may need extra support.

WPS offer child assessments such as: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cognitive, School Readiness, Educational, and Specific Learning Disorder Assessments. Please see below for further information on each assessment offered at WPS.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessments

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex developmental condition which can involve persistent communication challenges, restricted interests and repetitive behaviour. Autism Assessment’s can help determine an individual’s strength, challenges and support needs which can lead to a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder whilst providing appropriate interventions.

ASD Assessments at WPS will be conducted by a psychologist and a speech pathologist.

WPS offer fully comprehensive ASD Assessments which include the following:

  • Clinical interview

  • Pragmatics profile screener (conducted by speech pathologist)

  • Language assessment (conducted by speech pathologist)

  • Cognitive assessment (conducted by psychologist)

  • ADOS-2 (autism assessment, conducted by psychologist & speech pathologist)

  • Screeners (Vineland, Autism Spectrum Rating Scale)

  • Feedback session

WPS offer ASD assessments for both children and adults.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Assessments

An ADHD Assessment will help diagnose individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can assess symptoms of:

  • Impulsivity

  • Hyperactivity

  • Distractedness

  • Lack of focus

  • Challenges in completing tasks

Our psychologists are experienced and trained in conducting formal ADHD assessments however, further diagnosis and medication management may be required from a psychiatrist.

WPS provide ADHD assessments using psychometric evaluation, reliable measures and utilise standardised testing materials.

Both child and adult ADHD assessments now available.

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive Assessments help identify declines in cognition and whether someone has impairments in learning capabilities, also known as cognitive impairment. Cognitive Assessments can help detect both strengths and weaknesses in cognitive capabilities as well as providing recommendations and effective strategies to help support the individual. Symptoms in cognitive impairments may include:

  • Difficulty recalling events or forgetting things often

  • Losing your train of thought

  • Difficulty in communicating with others

  • Finding it hard to make decisions, finish a task or follow instructions

School Readiness Assessment

School Readiness Assessments help assess your child’s skills in preparation for schooling. This assessment will focus on the child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development to determine whether a child may need additional support to ensure a successful transition into school.

The School Readiness Assessment typically identifies:

  • Social and emotional skills

  • Play skills and emotional development

  • Cognitive development and skills

  • Gross and fine motor skills

  • Language and communication skills

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD)

Individuals who experience Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) may face challenges in learning capacities. This can affect how people take in information, understand and/or express and deliver information. The most common forms of learning difficulties are found in reading, spelling, spoken language and mathematics. SLD assessments can help identify gaps in learning and measure a child's academic ability.

WPS can conduct SLD assessments to rule out any potential intellectual disabilities such as the following:

  • Dysgraphia

  • Dyslexia

  • Dyscalculia

Some signs of SLD are:

  • Delays in child skill development around language, attention and learning

  • Students who are falling significantly behind in learning at school

  • Difficulty in following instructions

  • Challenges in expressing own thoughts

  • Poor memory and trouble following direction

This assessment may be beneficial to:

  • Identify individual strengths and weaknesses in academic performance

  • Identify behavioural issues that impede a child’s learning

  • Assist in developing appropriate strategies and recommendations to better a child’s learning experience
